Hi everyone!  I hope you had a nice restful weekend.
I wanted to let you know that Mrs. Zavala has been very diligent in keeping the homework records for our class.  If you child is consistently not turning in their homework (which includes their reading logs), you will be getting an email from me.  Please let me know if you have questions about the homework.


Tuesday is our 100th Day of School!  We are planning a lot of fun activities for the students.  I would ask that you let them bring in 100 items in a plastic (small) baggie.  It can be edible or non-edible.  We will be doing graphing and sorting activities with what they bring in.


A gentle reminder....we will be reading A Bargain for Frances next week, so please make sure your child has their own book to read from.

We will continue our study of fairy tales with the story of Puss in Boots. Students will continue to review the elements of fairy tales and understand the first, middle and ending of the story.  They will have an opportunity as a class to write their own fairy tale story to share with the other classes!  We will have an oral assessment for this unit on Friday.

History:

This week we will begin our study of Modern Civilization and Culture with Mexico.  Mexico has a rich and varied history and combines native American and Spanish legacies to create a vibrant culture.  Students will learn the location of Mexico relative to Canada and the United States.  They will recognize the Mexican culture through a study of their holidays, landforms, and art.

Math:

This week we will continue to grow our counting and addition skills for numbers 1-40. We will also be reviewing many of the skills and concepts that we have learned throughout the entire year including shapes, position, and "greater than" and "less than". We will celebrate our 100th day of school on Tuesday by completing many activities that will help us conceptualize just how big the number 100 really is. 0

Week 22 January 23-27


I hope all the students enjoyed their field trip experience last Tuesday! I know I did!
Thanks again parents for all your help in making theses events fun and safe for our children.
Please make sure your child returns their reading book bag on Monday. Chapter book students should continue reading at least 15 minutes each night, and return their books when they have finished to get a new one.


Looking ahead, we will be reading A Bargain for Frances by Russell Hoban starting in February, so if you have not purchased it, please do so soon.

This week we will review the religion of Islam and take an assessment on Wednesday.  Thursday we will begin our study of Mexico.  Students will locate the country on a map and label the Rio Grande River.

Science:

This week we will continue our study of body systems and learn about the Digestive System.  Students will learn the specific names of a few parts of the system, and complete a foldable activity describing what they have learned.

Math:

This week we will finish our unit on graphing and collecting data. We will also focus heavily on reviewing and mastering our math facts in order to move in to counting and adding numbers beyond 20. Please continue to help your scholars grow their math skills by practicing addition and subtraction each week at home.

Week 21  January 16-20, 2017


This Tuesday is our field trip to the Arizona Museum of Natural History in Mesa.  We will depart the school at 8:15 and arrive back at approximately 2:00.  Parents, if you are chaperoning or just meeting us at the museum you may not take your child home.  Students must return to the school.  Then if you choose, you may check them out at the front office.
Parents who are not chaperones may come to the museum at 10:00 when it opens.  You may stay in the group your child is assigned to for the duration of the field trip if you like, but they must stay with their group.
Also, students who were sent home with head lice must be checked by the nurse before re-entering the classroom.
Please have your child's lunches in throw away bags with their name on it.  I will bring water and snacks for them.




This week in 1B:

Literature:

We will continue our study of fairy tales with Rapunzel and The Frog Prince.  Students are diligently working in their packets and completing creative writing assignments.  We will continue to recognize the specific elements of fairy tales in the stories we read.

Writing:

Students will continue working on the conventions of a proper sentence.  We will be reading excerpts from Tom Sawyer and retelling the important details of the story.

Grammar:

This week we will introduce a new part of our grammar puzzle, the tiny articles A, an, and the.  Students will learn to recognize these in their writing projects.

Spelling:

Because this is a short week with the holiday and the field trip, students will have only 10 words to learn.

History:

This week we will continue to study the Islam religion and the regions where this religion is practiced.  We will look at the Five Pillars of this belief system and match the vocabulary to a foldable.

This week we will continue to study the human body by learning about the muscular system. Students will learn how our muscular system helps us move. We will learn about the three types of muscles. Skeletal muscles are used to move around, smooth muscles control the organs in the body, and cardiac muscle pumps our heart.

Math:

This week we will continue to practice our subtraction facts with numbers within 20.  Students will also create simple picture graphs using 1-1 representation.

Week 20  January 9-13, 2017


Welcome back everyone! I hope all had a wonderful break.
Thank you parents for my beautiful and yummy gifts.  Your kindness is most appreciated!
You have probably received your child's grades and may have some questions.  Please email me and we can set up a time for a conversation if you like.  Please remember the following guidelines for the grades below:

Students will receive the number 1-4 for different skills in each content area. For any skills not introduced yet (for example, time and money in math), there will be an “NA”. A 1 means the child needs a teacher’s full attention and continual support in order to be successful. A 2 means the child is able to complete the task, but still needs additional support. A 3 means the child shows proficiency in the skill but still benefits from occasional support. A 4 means that the child displays confident success without any further support than the original instructions.

I am excited for all the plans we have ready for the third quarter.  Our first event is the field trip next week, January 17, 2017 to the Arizona Museum of Natural History located in Mesa.   I have all the chaperones I need, but if you would like to attend the Museum, it will open at 10:00 a.m.  I would ask that if you would like to go through the museum with your child, please remain with the group he/she is assigned to and please do not go off on your own.  We have worked diligently coordinating our day, and with 124 people involved we would like to keep it as controlled as possible.  Thank you so much for helping with this.

Students will listen to passages out of A Child’s History of the World.  They will recognize basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite model sentences.

Students will review the basic parts of a sentence using the Shirley Jingles and review pages.

Literature:

This week we will begin our month long study of fairy tales with Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, and Hansel and Gretel.  Students will be introduced to the basic elements of a fairy tale, and use graphic organizers to identify characters, problems, and solutions in the stories.

History:

This week we will continue studying our third monotheistic religion, Islam.  Students will learn about the origins of the religion and about the prophet Muhammad who is recognized as the founder.  We will complete map labeling work of the countries in the Middle Easter where Islam began.

Math:

This week we will learn how to compare numbers within 20 and discover how to use the phrases "more than" and "less than" to describe a set of items. We will also review our subtraction and addition concepts by finding the difference and making pairs between many numbers.

Science:

This week we will begin our unit on the human body by studying the skeletal system. Students will learn about the main functions of the skeletal system, and identify some major bones and joints. Week 19  December 19-21


This a short week, but we still have some work to finish.
Parents PLEASE send the money for the field trip WITH your permission slips.  If we don't have both, your child will remain behind the day of the field trip with another class, and that would make me very sad!

Tuesday and Wednesday are half days!


Wednesday will be our Unit/Holiday party and pack-up for the quarter.


Winter break starts on Thursday, December 22^nd through Sunday, January 8^th.  School will resume on Monday, January 9^th.

Quarter 2 Evaluations will be sent to parents on Friday, January 6^that noon.

To Kindergarten and 1st grade families:

We are holding a grade-level team competition called “Royalty for a Day” to see who can bring in the most tax credits to support Archway Arete’s extracurricular clubs and sports.  If Kindergarten and 1^st grade bring in the most tax credits, I will be crowned “Queen of Arts” for a day when we return from our holiday break.  As the Queen, I plan on holding an Activity Extravaganza complete with games and dancing for all my royal subjects!  I will also hand out a special treat at the end of the event.  I appreciate all your help in asking friends, neighbors, and family to help support Archway Arete and help us win this competition!  I cannot wait to become Queen!

Literature:

This week we will finish our Frog and Toad unit with an assessment on Monday.  Tuesday and Wednesday we will be reading the Little Red Riding Hood and Lon Po Po stories. Students will discuss the similarities and differences between the two stories and make puppets!

Writing:

This week we will be reading excerpts from The Light Princess.  Students will listen to passages and retell important details from the story.  We will also work on basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite model sentences.

Grammar:

Students will practice writing sentences using adjectives, subject noun, verbs, and adverbs.  They will review the five parts of a sentence, and on Tuesday they will work independently to create two sentences for a grade.

History:

This week in History we will learn about Jesus’ last week of life on earth.  We will learn about Palm Sunday, the crucifixion, and the resurrection.  On Wednesday we will celebrate our studies of Judaism and Christianity in our end-of-the-year party, with special foods from each religion, along with crafts and stories.

Math:

Over the next three days we will spend time reviewing addition and subtraction with some very festive winter activities. This will help us make sure that we have achieved mastery of adding and subtracting so that we can start off next quarter ready to learn even bigger numbers! 

Science:

This week we will review the scientific method with a candy cane experiment! We will predict what will happen if we put candy canes in cups of vinegar, warm water, and cold water. After the experiment we will make observations about the effect of vinegar, warm water, and cold water on the candy canes.

Week 18  December 12-16


We have finished our middle of the year testing, and I am very pleased with the progress the students have made.  We have two more quarters to go, so please parents, watch and make sure your chapter book reader is reading at least 15 minutes each night.  They should be returning them approximately every 10 days for a new book.  Leveled Readers, please continue reading the same books for 15 minutes each night.  You may do one each night if you like, but 15 minutes is the minimum. And, don't forget to sign the log!

We have our chaperones for the field trip January 17 to the Arizona
Historical Museum in Mesa.  This will be such a fun day!  The cost is $10 per student, and you may send that in their green folders to Mrs. Zavala as soon as possible.  I would like to have all the money in before we leave on our holiday break.

Christianity is the next religion we will be discussing this week.  Students will learn key elements of this religion and will learn why Jesus is a key figure to Christians.

We will start by doing some graphing in class by taking surveys of our favorite things. We will then review how to identify and sort shapes as well as ordinal positions. We will spend the most time working on our math and subtraction concepts in order to reach a level of mastery on our skills. Wednesday will be very exciting because we will go on a math treasure hunt around the school to have some fun and practice solving our math facts!

Science:

This week we will continue to study electricity! We will read Thomas Edison’s biography and discuss his virtues and inventions. We will conduct an experiment using magnets, and use what we discover to learn about conductors and insulators. We will also learn about electrical circuits. We will also review how to be safe with electricity and why that is important. Finally, we will list the many ways that electrical power affects our lives and how our lives would be different if we didn’t use electricity.

Week 17  December 5-9


A look forward:
January 17 will be our field trip to the Museum of Natural History.  We will leave at 8:15 and return after lunch in the park.  I will accept the first six parents who would like to volunteer for this fun event as chaperones.  Also, the cost is $10.00 each and we are starting to collect that now.  Just send the money in an envelope addressed to Mrs. Zavala and put it in your student's green folder. More information and  permission forms will be forthcoming.

Science:

We will be learning about atoms and electricity this week! We will learn about the main parts of an atom and build a model to show protons, electrons, and neutrons. We will also use balloons to make discoveries about static electricity and read about Benjamin Franklin and his lightning experiment. Finally, students will be introduced to current electricity and circuits.

Students will unscramble sentences and then classify them.  We will ask questions while assisting them in labeling the parts of the sentence. On Friday there will be an assessment to check the student’s understanding of concepts presented thus far.

Science:

This week we will be wrapping up our unit about matter by learning about changes in states of matter. We will complete some experiments to observe melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation. On Wednesday, we will review for an assessment about the states of matter. Then, students will take review sheets home to study for a quiz on Friday. We will end the week with a fun experiment with Oobleck and discuss whether it is a solid or a liquid!

History:

In the the World History and Geography section of our Core knowledge Curriculum, we introduce children to not only ancient civilizations but also to topics in the history of world religions.  Many people who contributed to the Core Knowledge curriculum agreed that religion is a shaping force in the history of civilization and thus should be a part of what our children know about.  In introducing children to the history of world religions, we focus on major symbols, figures, and stories. Our goal is to be descriptive, not prescriptive, and to maintain a sense of respect and balance.  As we share about the symbols, figures, and stories I mention to our scholars that these are practices and beliefs of the people of that religion. If you practice one of our studied religions please feel free to send in any symbols to sharing.

This week we will begin our study of the three major monotheistic religions which worship One God.  They are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  Our journey begins with Abraham and Moses this week.  We will learn about their faith in God and the promises God made to the Hebrew people.  We will look at maps which show the travels of Abraham as he moved into “The Promised Land”, and retell the story of Moses dealing with Pharaoh in Egypt and the plagues God sent to cause Pharaoh to let the people leave Egypt and return to “The Promised Land.

Week 15  November 21-22


This is our Thanksgiving week and the students will not have homework.  Have a wonderful break and come back refreshed on Monday, November 28! 


This week in 1B:


Students are very excited about their Egypt Party on Monday!  Thank you parents for helping out with this.  It was a fun unit, and I know we have created memories for a lifetime.

Literature: This week, we will read chapter 3, “Cookies” from Frog and Toad Together. We will discuss the importance of having will power and determination, and we will also put our own will power to the test!

 Spalding: There will not be a spelling test this week, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Instead, please practice your phonograms. We will take a graded WPR (written phonogram review) on Tuesday in class.

 Writing: copy work and narration exercises from The Railway Children

 Grammar: We will use our question and answer flow to classify and build sentences.

Math:

This week we will finish up our shapes unit by reviewing how to identify and categorize 2D shapes as well as put them into a pattern. We will take our Unit 7 test on Monday. On Tuesday, we will take our units 1-6 cumulative test only after reviewing how to add and subtract within 20 and how to count up and down within 20. We will show courage and rise to the challenge of having two tests!

History:      

This week will be a lot of fun with our Egyptian Party, which is the culminating event for our Egyptian Unit.  Tuesday we will have a variety of Thanksgiving learning activities and read a book about the history of the Pilgrims and some of their adventures in the New World.

Week 14 November 14-18
What a busy week we have!  Don't forget the concert on Wednesday!
Winter concert:
The Archway Arete music concerts are this coming Wednesday, November 16th at the Higley Center for the Performing Arts.  Kindergarten, first, and second grades will perform at 5:30 p.m. with Kindergarteners arriving at 4:45 and 1st and 2nd graders arriving at 5:00 p.m.   Third, fourth, and fifth grades will perform at 7:00 p.m. with arrival at 6:30 p.m.  Please make sure to read this letter from Mrs. Kaye for specifics on required concert attire and arrival times.  We look forward to spending a wonderful evening with you!

Please remember also we are adjusting our dress to the winter code.

Winter Dress Code:
Beginning this Monday, November 14th, students will be required to follow the winter dress code.  Shorts are no longer allowed and must be replaced by navy pants. Skirts are still permitted but must be worn with tights or long socks.  Please email any dress code questions to our Dean of Students, Mrs. Kaye


Picture retakes are on November 18.  Please return your pictures if you want a retake.


Reading books returned on Monday! Parents, as a reminder, it is critical that you read these books each night with your student.  They will read to me and if they are not fluent (reading smoothly without sounding out words), I will keep them in the same level.  These are foundational skills you and I are working on together.  They may read something else if they finish before the 15 minute allotment.

On Wednesday we will have our third week of math centers and we will be getting hands on with our shapes as well as our addition and subtraction concepts.

History:

This week is our final week studying Ancient Egypt.  We will review for our assessment on Wednesday, and the students can take those home to study for the test on Thursday.  We will finally examine our mummified apples and determine if our hypotheses were correct or not.  This should be really fun and amazing for them!

Science:

This week we will learn about measurement, finding the length and weight of solids and the volume of liquids. We will use rulers, scales, and measuring cups to compare items around the classroom. First, we will learn about inches, feet, yards, and miles. Then, we will weigh items in ounces and pounds. Finally, we will learn about volume by measuring water in cups, pints, quarts, and gallons.

Winter Uniform Dress Code Update 
Due to warmer temperature, students may wear the summer dress code until Thursday, November 10th (there is no school on Friday). Beginning Monday, November 14th, students will be required to follow the winter dress code. Pants will be required or skirts must be worn with tights or long socks.

This week in 1B:

Literature: In Literature, we will be finishing up Frog and Toad Are Friends. We will reread chapter 4, “A Swim,” and read and discuss chapter 5, “The Letter”. On Thursday, we will take our first comprehension check over this book. Please bring in Frog and Toad Together by the end of the week to begin reading when we get back from the 3-day weekend!

 Spalding: There are only 20 words this week due to the shortened week. We will test on Thursday!

 Monday: far, gave, alike, add, brave, corn, dance, dinner, doll, egg

Tuesday: fruit, looks, pick, rich, zoo, zip, zero, seven, forget, happy

Writing: Our copy work and narration exercises this week come from The Saturdays.

 Grammar: We will be working with adverbs this week! We will review the adverb jingle and discuss its function in sentences. We will also learn how to identify adverbs in sentences, using the question and answer flow.

Poem: Thanksgiving Day – We will recite one stanza (of their choosing) the following week!

 

Math:

In math this week we will review how to add and subtract numbers within 20 using our "count back", "count on", and "making 10" strategies. On Wednesday we will have our second round of math centers and we will get up close and personal and use our hands to grow our math skills. At the end of the week we will have our Unit 6 Chapter 2 test and introduce geometrical shapes!

History:

Students will learn about how the farmers of the Nile River valley transported their crops to communities along the Nile River.  They will learn how reed boats were made and watch an educational video on the life of the Nile River then, and now. We will also learn how the papyrus tree was used to make paper.

Science:

This week in science we will be discovering more about the different states of matter. We will find solids, liquids, and gas in the classroom and discuss the differences between them. We will also make observations about balloons that are filled with air, water, and ice. The class will practice the steps of the scientific method by conducting an experiment using a bottle, baking soda, vinegar, and a balloon. We can’t wait to see what happens when we put those together!
